The Lagos Fringe Young Critics and Reviewers Residency program is aimed at equipping young critics and reviewers across Africa in strategically and critically analyze various forms of art. The forms of art include Film, Visual arts, literacy, music, and Live performances.
The goal of this program is to use constructive art criticism as a tool for challenging harmful stereotypes and narratives about the African continent.
The Lagos Fringe poses a great opportunity for the participants to not only be taught various forms of art criticism but to also gain hands-on experience while critiquing the various forms of art expressions at the Lagos Fringe.
The Lagos Fringe Young Critics and Reviewers Program which was launched in 2022 to nurture and develop the critical thinking and writing skills of young individuals in analyzing and interpreting various forms of art has been redesigned to include a residency & mentorship program.
Objective:
– Equip young critics with the knowledge and skills to thoughtfully evaluate and critique various forms of art expression.
– Foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of art among young people
– Provide a platform for young critics to share their perspectives and engage with the art community
– Use art criticism as a tool for changing the African narrative and to contribute positively to the creative economy.

– Workshops and training sessions on art criticism and journalism
– Mentorship from established art critics and industry professionals
– Opportunities to attend exhibitions, performances, and festivals
– Publishing opportunities for all art expressions through digital platforms and print media.
– Networking and community building amongst art critics in Africa and the diaspora.

Selected participants are encouraged but not mandated to participate in the physical sessions in Nigeria. Selected participants who do not reside in Nigeria but choose to be part of the physical program will be responsible for their travel expenses.
